Hello my name is Brenda! I have teamed up with my classmate, Rebecca Loredo, to work on this amazing senior project called Painting Smiles. We want to paint a mural in a children center so that we can get the kids involved and make them happy. This blog will document the progress and step-backs along the way of making Painting Smiles a reality! :)

We are Done!!

Our mural is now done and signed!!

I would be lying if I said this process was easy. It required a lot of work and time outside of class. To begin with, finding a place was the hardest part because without this we couldn't make our senior project happen. Once that was done our challenge became coming up with a design. We had to paint something that had meaning but that also made the people that looked at it smile! Fortunately we got the inspiration from another mural and got our idea. Now it was time to actually paint the mural. We had to make 3 trips prior to creativity week so that we would be ready to just get there and start painting. We also had to make a trip to Sherwin Williams to buy the 14 water-based colors we used. On Wednesday(Feb.16), time really began to be a pressure so we had to work from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. That day we were exhausted but we still had to go back to Janet's house and cut out start for an activity. Then the next day we worked at full speed so we could have enough time to do touch-ups.

We worked very hard last week but we enjoyed every moment of it. Painting was a challenge at times but it was regarding to, at the end of the day, look back and see all the progress we had done. The Boys and Girls Club now has an awesome, permanent mural of little children chasing their dreams. So whenever Rebecca and I go back to see it, all the memories of the good times spent there will rush back into our heads.

  1. Wow! You two really put your minds to this project and got it down while having fun and making a difference in our community. Way to go. I'm proud of my classmates. You girls are showing all of us that it is possible to fulfill what we truly want to achieve in this project. I am ready to tackle mine and have a blast doing it. I just have a few questions: Could you let me know how you got the paint and where you got the funds? How you contacted the Boys and Girls Club and made this possible? And what are your next steps? How do you plan on furthering this project? I'm very excited to hear your responses?

  2. Thank you! I'll be very proud of you too once you finish your senior project. And to answer your questions:

Well thanks to some connections we were able to get some board members, Sam and Martha Bowen, to donate the money needed to buy all the paint. Once we had the money we went to a Sherwin Williams and bought all the different colors and materials we needed - we made a list ahead of time. The connection to be able to paint at the Girls and Boys club was also made possible through them. It wasn't as easy as it sounds. It wasn't our initial intention to paint it there but since the other places had either rejected us, or couldn't help, we had to settle for what we got... Even though it turned our to be an amazing place to paint. Since the actual project is now done the next steps are to plan the final presentation which will be in Bay City (which is two hours away.) Also, hopefully in the near future the Club invites us back to paint a mural in another classroom. Our fingers are crossed but we'll see!! Hope the information helps and good luck to you in your project!! If there is something I can help you with, let me know. :)
